The Thumb Piano, or Mbira, or Karimba is a traditional African instrument. The seven notes suspended above the sound chamber create a gentle melodic sound. To play the instrument, hold in the palms of both hands and pluck down on the keys. This hand painted version is created from a hollowed out coconut shell with a painted wooden top. As well as an instrument it is a decorative object in its own right.
