Who Invented Drum Kits?
Due to a lack of space in theatres, in the 1890s percussionists started experimenting with footpedals to play the bass drum - so they could beat more than one instrument at once. Someone called William Ludenburerwig made the first bass drum pedal system in 1909 which paved the way for today's modern drum kit. By the first world war, drum kits consisted of bass drums and other percussion instruments and at that time this set up became part of playing jazz music. By the 1930s four piece drum kits were standard, consisting of tom-toms, snare drums, bass drums and floor toms. Amazingly, in 1964 drumming became even more popular when Ringo Star from the Beatles played on American television.
