This is just an amazing snare drum! From a safety point of view, snare drums that you normally see on drum kits are not really safe enough for very young children to play with, this is because it has all sorts of small parts that can come off. So, some musicians got together and designed a very affordable snare drum especially for young children. It's amazing, it sounds just like one. It's light, easy to hold and comes with a mallet. Our male testers thought they were really cool and they just couldn't put them down when we tested them which I thought was really funny.

Have you ever wondered what snare drums are used for? Originally they were used as military instruments and came from Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. At that time they were often called a 'tabor'. Today, snare drums are used in nearly every form of western music. They are often used in jazz music with brushes to provide an accented backbeat to support and interact with another musical part. They can be used in rock music , many drummers choose to have more than one in their drum set to make a better dynamic set up. The snare drum is also widely used in Samba music where 'ghost notes' are made continuously outlining the rhythm. They are also used when playing metal. Snare drums are still used in marching bands or in a drum corps setting and provide a steady source of rhythm. You see them attached to the drummer with either a harness or a marching drum carrier. The marching snare drums are usually tuned and more frequently to a really high pitch.

Snare drums can also be called 'side drums' and they are made from either metal or wood with skins or heads which is stretched over the top and the bottom of the drum. The snares which are cords are usually stretched over the bottom of the drum head. Snare drums come in different sizes and each size determines the sound of the drum. So if they are shallow, they sound a higher pitch, if they are deeper ie larger they will sound heavier and deeper, a sort of thicker tone. They are usually sounded by either drumsticks or brushes.

Size of drum: Approx 180mm dia (7 inches)
Size of mallet: Approx 190mm (7.5inches)
