This children's songbook 'Bobby Shaftoe, Clap your Hands' contains a collection of 37 new songs created from traditional melodies for children aged around 4-6 years. It's ideal for both parents and practitioners working with young children because no music ability is required to follow this songbook. The songs use melodies you are likely to already know (such as This Old Man, Hickory dickory dock etc.) just different words - so you can be confident in singing with children. The songs encourage children to listen to sounds, discriminate betwen them, use them in performance and improve their co-ordination through movement activities.

The first section includes action, movement and imagination songs, using the whole body, hands and movement to help children improve their physical co-ordination and their ability to feel music's pulse. Here there are many oportunities to add new verses. The second section gives children the opportunity to explore new sounds. The third section concentrates on listening activities. The fourth is about making patterns such as playing on the strong beats, the rhythm of the words or keeping silent until it is your turn to play.
