This Teaching Foundation Children's music book will give any person working with children with little or no experience of working with foundation aged children the confidence and guidance to deliver a rich and varied course of music to the Foundation Stage age group. This music book has been especially designed to include a great deal of flexibility for foundation practitioners who find themselves teaching either one or more than one year group at the same time. The book can also be used on an ad hoc basis and for different lengths of time to suit most timetables. A music lesson from this Teaching Foundation Music book can take up a single or double page, depending on the amount of teaching time available. Each foundation music session comprises a 20 minute section, followed by an optional 10 minutes of extension work. According to your situation and your circumstances that particular day, you can choose to do only the basic part of each session or to add some or all of the extension work. There are a total of 60 sessions and 10 equate to approximately one full teaching term.

Most of the music sessions include a song or a rhyme which generally forms the main part of the lesson. The songs cover a wide range of themes and topics, which you can dip into even if it appears much later in the book. This will also allow you to integrate it with your own planned activities. This Teaching Foundation Music book supports the QCA Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage, which are also common to the Foundation Stages in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

The CD that comes with the Teaching Foundation Music book includes plenty of original tunes and just a handful of traditional songs - and it precludes the necessity to play the piano!!

To use this teaching foundation music book, Ann Bryant recommends you use a xylophone or a glockenspiel for yourself and enough instruments for every child in your music group to have one each. In the course, percussion instruments are sometimes used to play on the beat and sometimes to provide sound 'colour'. For the purposes of the latter, the more sounds you have the better, including homemade instruments! There are also some wonderful musical instruments, specifically designed with small hands in mind, that you can also see from Amusia, that would be ideal for use with this book. Ann Bryant who is the author of this Teaching Foundation Music book recommends the following children's musical instruments to go with this music book:

6 small tambourines
6 hand drums with beaters
6 maracas or shakers
12 wooden instruments

Ann Bryant trained at the Royal College of Music and acquired a postgraduate course in Dalcroze Eurhythmics. As well as teaching music at foundation level and Key Stage 1, Anne has taught music, movement and drama both here in the UK and in Europe winning literary awards as a children's author and composer of music.
